The program – Natural Gas Technician Certificate – is the first of its kind in the energy industry, and was created by National Grid to address advances in the energy industry and a projected increase in retirement-eligible workers at National Grid locations and across the energy industry. It is a 12-week program which introduces individuals to the gas industry and exposes them to the job tasks, work methods and safety practices utilized by various workforce positions in gas construction, maintenance and customer service. Successful completion of this Certificate guarantees an employment interview with National Grid. The training will take place at the National Grid Springfield Learning Center in Queens, NY and starts in February 2018. All applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a High School diploma or GED/TASC, possess a valid driver’s license, and pass an aptitude test and physical assessment.

Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York (CUNY) has a longstanding relationship partnering with National Grid. In 2016 the Customer Experience Management program (CXM Academy) was launched at Kingsborough. The CXM Academy prepares students for careers in customer service and call centers with opportunities for advancement.

“The Customer Experience Management program has proven to be a success with the strong commitment from the Kingsborough Community College students, who are now National Grid employees,” said Ken Daly, president of National Grid, New York and past chairman of the KCC Foundation. “We are very proud to continue our partnership on another industry leading training program, the National Grid Natural Gas Certificate Program. We are excited to educate and train the next generation of clean energy employees across New York and we look forward to the graduating students providing the foundation for an even safer, more reliable natural gas network in the future.”

“National Grid’s continued investment in Kingsborough’s students speaks to their commitment to creating a solid workforce,” said Kingsborough Vice President for Continuing Education, Workforce Development and Strategic Community Partnerships Dr. Reza Fakhari.
