Kingsborough Awarded DOL Grant

Kingsborough Community College, Center for Economic and Workforce Development
The Northeast Resiliency Consortium

September 26, 2013

Kingsborough Community College (KCC) has just been awarded a $3.8 million Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (DOL TAACCCT) grant. The TAACCCT program, administered by the US Department of Labor in collaboration with the US Department of Education, is a multi-year initiative seeking to expand training programs for workers impacted by foreign trade and other under- and unemployed workers.  Round 1 funding, awarded in September 2011, supports CUNY CareerPATH, a highly successful program led by KCC and the CUNY Central Office that prepares people for employment and college through credit bearing occupational training. Round 3 will fund the Northeast Resiliency Consortium, a regional collaboration led by Passaic County Community College.

The Northeast Resiliency Consortium (NRC), a collaboration of seven east coast colleges—Atlantic Cape (NJ), Bunker Hill (MA), Capital (CT), Housatonic (MA), Kingsborough (NY), LaGuardia (NY)  and lead, Passaic County (NJ) Community Colleges—in partnership with Achieving the Dream and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, will train a highly skilled and resilient workforce that is prepared to mitigate the short- and long-term vulnerabilities and risks resulting from disasters and crises. The institutions that make up this consortium bring with them experiences responding to and recovering from recent disasters including Superstorm Sandy, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings and the Boston Marathon bombings.

CUNY CAREERPATH COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM SEES ITS FIRST STUDENT ENTER HOSTOS COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Thursday, September 12, 2013 (Bronx, NY)—Anita Bhattacharjee took a rather selfless
approach to higher education. She waited until her children had received the kind of
education she valued so highly before returning to the classroom herself at age 52.
After graduating from the CUNY CareerPATH Community Health Worker Certificate
Program in December of 2012, Anita was the first member of her cohort to enroll for a
regular associate’s degree course load at Eugenio María de Hostos Community
College. “I was a single mother who always made sure my three children studied hard for school, and with that, my daughter graduated with honors at the age of 16. With more
determination and hard work, my twin boys went on to attain college degrees.
Nevertheless, my education was always at the back of my mind. I wanted them to
graduate first, but having my college degree was something I always wanted,” Anita
said.

The CUNY CareerPATH Community Health Worker Certificate Program trains residents of South Bronx and Northern Manhattan who meet the eligibility requirements to join the healthcare workforce. The training consists of 120 hours centered on community health worker core competencies, and contemporary health issues such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease and chronic disease self-management. An additional 60 hours are devoted to helping participants develop their academic skills in reading, writing and math.

Working Millennials

Lately, I’ve seen countless over-the-top generalizations about millennials (aka, Generation Y—those born between the early 1980s and early 2000s, give or take a few). Either we’re entitled, lazy workers who can’t complete tasks on our own or we’re engaged activists who use their creative, technology-driven thinking to get things done. For me? Definitely the latter group. However you see them (or yourselves!) this group cannot be dismissed.

Since our focus at CEWD is employment services, we can’t ignore how workplace demographics are changing:

and people on both sides (hiring professionals and eager workers alike) need to update our thinking:

Thoughts? Everyone is voicing their opinions…it’s time to hear yours.

Understanding Your Digital Footprint

Where are you on the internet? Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn? It’s important to know that most employer prospects are checking you out online before you’re even called for an interview. Your digital footprint has become your first impression. With this in mind, keep your online persona presentable by claiming your space(s), being wary of the content you post, and keeping your profiles updated and relevant.

Still don’t believe us? A study (a little old, but still applicable) of hiring professionals shows us how likely your digital footprint affects your hireability:

Deciding on a Career

There’s so much to think about when deciding on your future career: passion, education, job availability, quality of life, potential for growth, etc. These issues, on their own, will not define your path, but will work together to help narrow your options. Kacey Crawford, in Drowning in Career Options at thedailymuse.com outlined 5 important things to consider when choosing which path to follow:

Researching the job market—what’s currently available, expected trends for that industry
Considering your future lifestyle hopes—regional availability, estimated compensation, flexibility
Volunteering/Interning—take a test-run before you decide
Hobbies as a separate passion—hobbies to take you away from work
Realizing you don’t have to narrow it down to just one

Some more things to consider:
