Advanced Credential Program with SIU & KCC (For KCC Maritime Students)

KCC’s Advanced Credential Program is being provided in partnership with Seafarers International Union (S.I.U.), the largest North American union representing merchant mariners. This program provides currently enrolled Maritime Students with an amazing opportunity to obtain additional credentials for their Maritime Career by training at the Seafarers International Union’s training center in Piney Point Maryland.

The training consists of Basic Training, Government Vessels Training, and Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) Training. After the initial training period, you can earn while you learn! Students have the option of being able to continue to train with SIU to develop their career & also earn money while working with SIU.

Kingsborough Community College provides assistance with the SIU Apprenticeship application, money to cover obtaining your Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC card), Merchant Mariners Credential, dental exam, physical,  a stipend to cover the cost of travel to Piney Point, MD for your training, and much, much more! 

This program started in February 2024 and will have open spots available monthly throughout the rest of the year. Applications and information can be received at this time.

Duration and Location of the program: The program can range from 12 days- 3 weeks depending on the session you enroll in. Location of the training for the program is at the SIU Training Facility in Piney Point, Maryland.

Eligibility: Copy of a valid U.S. passport. 18+ or older. Must be eligible to work in the United States. Cannot be on any form of probation or parole. If convicted of any crime other than a minor traffic violation you will be required to submit a final court disposition(s). Must be able to pass drug test including cannabis (THC or CBD). Must be able to pass a dental exam with no cavities, pyorrhea, or periodontal disease. Must be able to pass Coast Guard level doctors physical. This program is only for students who are enrolled in KCC’s Maritime Technology A.A.S. degree program.

Benefits: Earn 3 credentials that can be used in a variety of Maritime jobs. Ability to continue to train, develop skills, and obtain additional certification with SIU. Fees covered for Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC), Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC), and United States Coast Guard (USCG) physical, drug test, yellow fever and MSC shot. Stipend to cover the cost of travel to Piney Point, MD, and more!
