NRC at Local Job Fair

On Sept 19th, NRC Program Coordinator, Fiormelissa Johnson,  had the opportunity to attend NYS Senator Joe Addabbo’s Job Fair at the Rockway/Arverne YMCA. Ms. Johnson stated, “There must have been over 400 people in attendance and thankfully it was very well attended by vendors as well.” In an effort to boost employment and provide additional resources to the Far Rockaway community, Senator’s Addabbo’s office contacted numerous companies and not-for-profits; many of which were hiring or, like the Northeast Resiliency Consortium (NRC), providing low cost training and employment readiness services to needed communities in New York City. Some of the companies that were in attendance were: Delta, NYC Police Department, Sears, AARP, Kingsborough Community College (NRC program), Avon and many more. “Overall, the Job Fair was a success, as you looked around the enormous gym, where the event was held, you can see nothing but smiling potential employees.”

Once a month we post information about upcoming job fairs and other career-focused events happening in and around New York City. Check out our “job fair” tag to see what’s happening next.

Community Health Worker Program at NRC

NRC (Northeast Resiliency Consortium) partners are running programs throughout the northeast (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts). Check out this story about Community Health Worker (CHW) classes at Housatonic Community College in CT.

The Community Health Worker program at Kingsborough’s NRC prepares students for educational pathways at other CUNY schools and for careers as case managers, community counselors and patient advocates, just to name a few. We will be holding information sessions for our CHW program later this fall, so fill out this quick survey to reserve your spot.

LaborDay2014

Jazz Age Lawn Party

In August, a number of NRC Culinary Arts students were given the opportunity to work a refreshments table at the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island. This prohibition-era, historical gathering brought attendees back to a time when gramophones were king, cars were beautiful and dance was an art.

Seven NRC students from Culinary Arts Cohorts 2 and 3 worked with Michelle’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese and Pickles, Ukulele Luau, Arenella’s Raw Bar and many others, preparing and serving food to event-goers. This paid work opportunity provided our students with valuable catering experience that many had never been introduced to before.

If you’re interested in opportunities like this, come to CEWD’s Fall Open House to hear all about NRC and our other workforce training programs.
