Jazz Age Lawn Party

In August, a number of NRC Culinary Arts students were given the opportunity to work a refreshments table at the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island. This prohibition-era, historical gathering brought attendees back to a time when gramophones were king, cars were beautiful and dance was an art.

Seven NRC students from Culinary Arts Cohorts 2 and 3 worked with Michelle’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese and Pickles, Ukulele Luau, Arenella’s Raw Bar and many others, preparing and serving food to event-goers. This paid work opportunity provided our students with valuable catering experience that many had never been introduced to before.

If you’re interested in opportunities like this, come to CEWD’s Fall Open House to hear all about NRC and our other workforce training programs.

Harvest Fest at Paerdegat Park

The office of Senator Kevin Parker will be hosting the 7th Annual Harvest Fest, an end-of-summer, back-to-school celebration on Saturday, September 6, 2014 (12:00-5:00p) at Paerdegat Park (E. 40th St between Foster and Albany Aves).

Along with food, music and activities, this event will provide information about local youth programs and and for those looking to go to college. Fiormelissa from the Northeast Resiliency Consortium will be there to talk about NRC and other programs offered at CEWD.

From Kevin Parker’s offices: “This highly anticipated event has become a signature community event for working families as they prepare to send their school-aged children back to school.”

Go early so you can pick up free back-to-school supplies including backpacks, notebooks and pens and pencils, and that are offered to local families (while supplies last).

NRC Highlights

With classes running for all of our programs, the Northeast Resiliency Consortium team and CEWD have not slowed down for the summer! Some NRC Highlights:

NYC’s Post-Disaster Housing

As the Northeast Resiliency Consortium begins its roll-out, we’ve made it a point to stay on top of infrastructure and systems developed by NYC to help local residents in the wake of future natural disasters. Earlier this year the New York City Office of Emergency Management unveiled the NYC’s post-disaster housing prototype. The structure includes 3 units (2 3-bedroom units and 1 1-bedroom unit) that each have a kitchen, living space, bathroom, storage space and even a balcony! What’s great is that these units have been created so that they can be assembled on site, allowing residents to stay in their communities and not rebuild too quickly (especially helpful in densely urban areas like NYC when development processes change in the wake of natural disasters). A unit has been constructed in Brooklyn Heights and will be on public display within the next few weeks. Take a look at this timelapse of a one being constructed:

Community Health Workers

Community Health Worker jobs are growing in number, complexity and importance…

At 22,053,900 projected workers in 2020, the healthcare industry makes up the largest segment of the United States’ economy. Not just doctors and nurses, the healthcare industry also broadly encompasses the nonclinical, community and social service, and support positions that comprise 42% of the healthcare workforce.

The community health worker has taken on new importance as hospitals look to extend themselves and bring healthcare services to patients where they live. Among the occupations with the largest percentage increases across the country, office workers such as medical office specialists, office supervisors, and medical records technicians have seen their positions adapt and grow. And, a new position, often referred to as patient navigator or patient representative, has been created to facilitate smooth coordination of health services for patients.

Medical Assistant Jobs

Curious about what a career in medical assisting means? Take a look at this great graphic coming from NYC LMIS as part of CUNY CareerPATH to show inquiring students where this career path can lead.

“Working under the supervision of a physician or nurse, medical assistants perform a combination of administrative and clinical functions. Clinical students may include taking vital signs, drawing blood and preparing patients for examinations. Administrative duties may include scheduling, maintaining records and billing and coding for insurance.”
