This CE workshop will address the complexities within family systems leading up to, during, and after a couple dissolve their marriage. Current statistics, actual case studies, problem solving, and psychological detriments that impact the system will be presented for the benefit of clinicians in preparation of treating individuals and couples subjected to this life changing adjustment. Presenter will demonstrate learning how to treat couples in marital discord leading to divorce, during the divorce and post-divorce processes, both through the court system and mediation. Discussed topics will include identification of potential risk and protective factors associated with children’s psychological and academic functioning, social adjustments, the importance of how this impacts parenting in two households, how co-parenting is remedied, the possibility of parent alienation, loyalty binds, parent/child alignment, sibling rivalry, and extended family involvement. Presenter will teach clinicians on how to detect behaviors that are the result of temporary adjustments to the fractured household, and how to separate from the system issues that lie beyond divorce yet exacerbated by divorce, and those issues that are unrelated but can impact the divorce proceedings and family structure.
