NRC Employer Event

On July 20th, Kingsborough’s Northeast Resiliency Consortium Culinary Arts program hosted an employer event where our partners from Workforce1, a program of NYC’s Department of Small Business Services that connects qualified candidates to job opportunities in NYC, and a manager from a local Chipotle restaurant, came to KCC to talk about jobs in NYC’s fast-paced culinary industry. Additionally, participants were invited to directly apply to food service positions available at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The highlight of the event was a past NRC Culinary Arts participant who shared his experience in the program and how it impacted both his employment and personal life.

NRC Grad on Master Chef!

Do you watch the widely popular cooking competiting, Master Chef? If you’re watching this season, take special note of Shelly Flash. In 2013 she enrolled in our very own Northeast Resiliency Consortium under the Culinary Arts training program. Shelly completed the program and, with 9 banked college credits, immediately enrolled in KCC’s Culinary Arts program.

From a recent KCC press release, Chef Thomas Smyth, Director of KCC’s Culinary Arts program, noted that Shelly was “extremely eager to get started learning. She has a wonderfully effervescent spirit and a unique, undeveloped talent for cooking, which serves her well as a MasterChef contestant. We’re proud of her, and are rooting for her all the way.”

Job Training Program Open House Spring 2015

NRC Work Based Learning Opportunities

Earlier this fall, NRC Culinary Arts students participated in two Work Based Learning Opportunities that introduced them to both the catering/events management and business end of working in NYC’s culinary industry.

On Thursday, November 20th the NRC Culinary Arts Cohort # 4 students had the opportunity to participate in a Work Based Learning Opportunity, where they were provided a business operations tour by the owner of Black Shack, Mr. Jeff. Students learned about the intricacies of running a business and the importance of having a great sense of money management. “What was wonderful about this opportunity, was the students obtained real life experience; the information was not derived from a text book; rather, a visual experience that will surely stick with them,” said, an NRC staff member. Besides obtaining this real life experience, students were treated to one of the best burgers in town; student’s were astonished by the quality and the personal service provided by Black Shack, which will probably be one of the best memorable experiences in the program.

The Chef’s for Impact event was held, also on Thursday, November 20th, 2014, where the best chefs in New York gathered in an effort to raise funds to deliver e-Learning to rural Africa. Continue reading →

Project Rise Success Stories 2014

If you’re a follower of this blog, you’ve seen post after post we’ve written about the success of Project Rise. We’re obviously proud of what we do. What makes our program so great is the one-on-one attention we’re able to give our participants. This individualized counseling, along with extensive preparation for the GED/TASC and job readiness training has allowed so many participants to reactivate their professional, educational and personal lives.

A. started PR feeling insecure about her academic ability despite having specific career goals. To hide her insecurity, she focused more energy on the people around her and neglected her own academic goals. With the help of Project Rise staff, she began to take Project Rise more seriously 4 months into the program. Since then, she has become incredibly focused in class and has started a coveted internship at a local hospital. What’s more, A. has noticed the shift in her own attitude and has often referred to the “old her” and the “new her” as she speaks with classmates and program staff.

We are currently recruiting for Community Health Worker, Culinary Arts and Food Service Upgrade NRC classes. CUNY CareerPATH Recruiting

If you’re interested in getting the training needed to start your career, our CUNY CareerPATH sibling colleges, College of Staten Island (click here for CSI’s online survey), City Tech and Borough of Manhattan Community College are currently recruiting for their programs in Business, Manufacturing and Direct Care Counselor, respectively. If you’re interested in getting more information about these programs, visit our information page fill out our online survey and a CCP representative will get in contact with you about registration.

CCP is a US Department of Labor TAACCCT Round 1 grant program that has been wildly successful since we began running programs in 2011. Our marketing team was recently recognized for a successful marketing campaign that helped bring in under- and un-employed New Yorkers. Earlier this year, CCP was highlighted by Tom Hilliard at the Center for an Urban Future as a program that needs to be “scaled up” and have a “deeper coordination with city workforce, education and youth development agencies” to continue providing these much-needed services. At KCC, our Culinary Arts graduates have been led to great success even after leaving CCP.
