Concrete Rose Affect: Using Hip Hop Therapy Techniques to connect with Black Male Youth

Hip Hop interventions are more context-based, growth-oriented, and attentive to community and individual well-being; with therapeutic emphasis on strength, solutions, and potential, these approaches are essential to black youth-specific social and environmental stressors. Concrete Rose Affect (CRA) is a strength-based Hip Hop Therapy (HHT) program that empowers Black male youth to heal and succeed. The client-centered framework provides culturally competent treatment to Connect, Create and Transform the psyche of Black Male Youth (BMY). This session will examine and discuss the prevailing constructs about black male youth held by clinicians. They will explore how some of these conceptual beliefs have historically impeded black male youths’ participation in mental health services. Hip Hop Therapy is explained and clinicians will gain an understanding of its history and development. Additionally, practicing the framework of “Connect, Create and Transform” to aid clinicians in obtaining a deeper understanding of hip hop therapy as a way to help youth develop a sense of purpose and self.
