NRC Culinary Arts Students Visit KCC Urban Farm

Earlier this month students from the NRC Culinary Arts job training program at Kingsborough visited KCC Urban Farm to get a hands-on lesson on the value of fresh, organic produce. Students, many of whom mentioned already having experience with their own gardens, were surprised to learn how easy it is to grow delicious food without using pesticides. Linking this visit to their work in the kitchen, students compared tomatoes grown on the Farm to store-bought ones, realizing the rich color, appealing texture, and vibrant flavor would be so much more appealing to customers.

Through NRC training, students learn about the of fundamentals of food industry jobs including cooking terminology and techniques, they’re given an introduction into what they’ll experience once they’re in a professional kitchen, and most importantly for NRC, they’ll develop a background for what it means to be resilient individuals, both in their personal and professional lives. Our program’s partnership with Kingsborough Community College provides classes that are taught by KCC faculty, through KCC’s Culinary Arts program, and access to many of the college’s perks, including the KCC Urban Farm.

NRC at Local Job Fair

On Sept 19th, NRC Program Coordinator, Fiormelissa Johnson,  had the opportunity to attend NYS Senator Joe Addabbo’s Job Fair at the Rockway/Arverne YMCA. Ms. Johnson stated, “There must have been over 400 people in attendance and thankfully it was very well attended by vendors as well.” In an effort to boost employment and provide additional resources to the Far Rockaway community, Senator’s Addabbo’s office contacted numerous companies and not-for-profits; many of which were hiring or, like the Northeast Resiliency Consortium (NRC), providing low cost training and employment readiness services to needed communities in New York City. Some of the companies that were in attendance were: Delta, NYC Police Department, Sears, AARP, Kingsborough Community College (NRC program), Avon and many more. “Overall, the Job Fair was a success, as you looked around the enormous gym, where the event was held, you can see nothing but smiling potential employees.”

Once a month we post information about upcoming job fairs and other career-focused events happening in and around New York City. Check out our “job fair” tag to see what’s happening next.

Job Focused Websites

It’s been a while since we’ve posted information about applying for jobs. Since you’re probably reading this post on a computer, we’ll give you a small sampling of some great job focused websites that will make your next move so much smoother.

If you haven’t signed up for the Daily Muse, I highly suggest getting on their mailing list. Instead of simply posting stagnant job information, their articles directly target job searchers with information about trending businesses, advice about moving ahead in current positions, guidance about constructing a resume that will stand out to potential employers, the roles of social media in job searching and networking, and hot-topic articles that are relevant to all workers.
