Cultural Sensitivity: What I Didn’t Know That I Didn’t Know
October 26, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Participants will learn about cultural sensitivity and how it relates to social work education. Our discussion will revolve around the fact that most social work schools approach culture from a contextual perspective that is characterized by oppressed groups. These methods give the impression of cultural sensitivity, but also create unconsciously implicit bias in the clinician. Taking the time to unpack these teachings will strengthen connections between social workers, community providers, and clients and their families. In this workshop, participants will utilize what they have learned about diversity and cultural sensitivity to build understanding and self-reflect. Learn how to recognize and shift our approach to understanding these groups so that their strengths are emphasized rather than their struggles. In addition, participants will develop their ability to handle hot button issues or other challenging situations and lead conversations about race with presence, grace, and authority.
