Please join us for Food Day, Wednesday Nov 1st 2017 as part of the 3rd Annual Diversity Symposium. Food Day is an all day event highlighting the change-makers in our food system. Take part in a workshop on seed keeping, attend a panel on Undoing Racism in the Food System, Women in Food Entrepreneurship, or Farm Workers Rights, take part in cooking demos, or bring your classes to a film screening & discussion of SEED: the Untold Story.

Please share with your students, and feel free to bring your classes to the event. Food Day is free and open to the public, lunch will be provided. There are lunch sessions and after work sessions. Attached is the event flier & schedule for the day so you can choose when to join in.

Food Day is a collaboration between: KCC Urban Farm, Community Health Program, Holistic Health Club, Culinary Arts Program, Food Club and the Farm Faculty Interest Group.

NATIONAL GRID SERVES AS ANCHOR PARTNER FOR KINGSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE MANAGEMENT ACADEMY IN EXPANDING WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP

Brooklyn, NY | October 20, 2017:

An inspiring video highlighting National Grid as the anchor partner for Kingsborough Community College’s (KCC) new Customer Experience Management (CXM) Academy (http://www.kbcc.cuny.edu/continuinged/Documents/CXM_Academy/CXM_Info_Card.pdf) focuses on a recently-developed, industry-driven innovative model of education and workforce development. This unique partnership—geared toward ensuring professional and academic equity for students transitioning from community to senior colleges—provides real-world business training to help sustain competitive wages for program participants entering the job market.

The CXM Academy model draws upon the College’s best resources to prepare eligible students for entry into customer relations positions in New York City. Academy students learn communication skills, business etiquette, and financial literacy. There is also a focus on cultural competency, social networking, customer management technology, labor relations management, and government and policy regulations. Academy cohorts take part in mandatory workshops throughout the semester to help them develop as professionals and prepare for the world of work.

Students completing the Academy gain access to paid employment in one of the ten committed industry/business partnership sites that Kingsborough has developed.

Both entities aim to increase awareness about educational resources and job opportunities for local residents

Coney Island, October 19th, 2017 –

The Alliance for Coney Island and Kingsborough Community College are excited to announce a partnership that will  bring more opportunities to Coney Island residents.

Beginning October 25th, A Kingsborough Community College job developer will be available in the Alliance’s office from 9:30am -2:30pm every Wednesday to offer one-on-one career advisement by appointment or walk-in as available.  The goal of the partnership is to bring awareness of Kingsborough’s training and educational  resources as well as assist in developing the skill sets of job seekers to connect them to employment opportunities in Coney Island and beyond.  As Coney Island has an unemployment rate of over 12%, both organizations identified a major need for this resource.

 

“As an organization that is focused on economic development and opportunity, we are very excited about this partnership with Kingsborough Community College.  We hold job recruitment events annually for the opportunities in Coney Island and see this addition to our work and initiatives as a critical step to preparing individuals for opportunities both locally and in New York City.  We welcome both Coney Island residents and other residents in Brooklyn to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Alexandra Silversmith, Executive Director of the Alliance for Coney Island.

KCC Urban Farm is Hiring Student Aides

KCC Urban Farm is looking for student aides to join our farm crew! Crew members should be responsible, dependable and enjoy working outside. Farm Crew members are hired on as student aides and must be enrolled full-time at KCC.

DESCRIPTION

The student farm crew makes the farm run. You may work up to 20 hours/week, during operational farm hours: M & Th 8:30-1:30pm; Tue & Wed 9-2pm

Our crew is actively involved in all aspects of managing the farm, including:

  • Harvest (Monday & Thursday mornings at 8:30 am)
  • Irrigation (Watering the garden.)
  • Propagation (Planting seeds.)
  • Building and turning compost piles.
  • Site maintenance (Laying wood chips on paths, moving compost, etc.)
  • Delivering produce to our campus partners
  • Participating in campus events.

Brooklyn Science Innovation Initiative Final Event!

 

This summer, 30 NYC high school students participated in Kingsborough’s Brooklyn Science Innovation Initiative (BSII), a STEM program that combined chemistry, nutrition, urban farming and entrepreneurship topics into one 5-week summer intensive.

Using KCC’s Urban Farm as a hands-on, living lab, students learned about carbohydrates, fats, protiens, vitamins and minerals through a nutritional chemistry course. This class was paired with a business course, Sustainable Entrepreneurship, where groups of students developed businesses based on the science topics they learned.

Join us on Thursday, August 3rd for the final event where groups of students will pitch their business in a “Shark Tank”-style event and showcase the science behind their work in a posterboard session. All are welcome to attend.

This Summer at Kingsborough: Chemistry, Nutrition, Business and Farming!

Calling all High School Juniors! 

Spend July with Kingsborough’s for the Brooklyn Science Innovation Initiative (BSII) a science and business immersion program!

 

This program has a lot going for it! First, you’ll learn about foundational chemistry topics through the lens f nutrition, specifically about how chemicals, vitamins and minerals effect basic bodily systems. Second, you’ll use KCC Urban Farm, KCC’s on-campus food production site, as a hands-on laboratory. Third, you’ll take what you’ve learned to create businesses that respond to industry-related problems. When you go back to school in the Fall, you’ll have the power to amaze your friends with your knowledge of chemistry, business, nutrition AND farming.

Last year’s focus of Earth Science led students to create businesses such as SpearTech, a solar-powered outdoor canopy that harnesses the sun’s power for usable energy, and BeeHax, a company that studies and proposes solutions to the collapse of bee colonies around the world, among others.

Success Story: Ashlye Vazquez

“I was not going to give up, so I applied aggressiveness and went for it.”

Ashlye was a student of KCC’s Project Rise in 2014. She entered the program having already completed the requisite credits for high school completion at the Bronx Aerospace Academy, but was denied a diploma on a technicality. While she had a passion for a job in the aviation industry, she knew that in order to support herself and her daughter, she would need to change her immediate career prospects.

Upon attending an information session, program administrators, Norma D’Arancio and Victoria Bershtat, urged her to enroll telling her that she had the skills to rapidly excel in the program. The commute was long but knowing that “the further I had to [travel] to get an education, the more I’d want it.” This momentum began the moment she started.
