I’m a little late with this, but I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to showcase one of our participants. In October, Kingsborough hosted a Diversity Symposium that brought together students, faculty, college staff members and outside guests to discuss this year’s topic: Creating Safe Environments. In addition to the college’s “safe zones” (offices designated free of discrimination of race, gender, sexuality and color where students and staff members to ), the campus has a no tolerance policy for acts of discrimination. The Diversity Symposium opened discussion for campus members to talk about what it means within the college and in the outside world.

CEWD’s Presentation at CUNY IT
On Thursday, December 4th, 2014 CEWD presented at the 13th Annual CUNY IT Conference at John Jay College. The presentation was moderated by Dr. Edgar Troudt, CEWD Director of Technology, with speakers including Christopher Pileggi, Min-Kyung Park, Gillian Gooding, Christine Zagari-LoPorto and Jessie Cinelli (read our full bios here). Workforce Development Supported by Strategic IT Investments detailed our multi-faceted use of technology that supports CEWD’s many programs and initiatives.
NRC Culinary Arts Info Session for HS Counselors
Event for NYC High School Counselors
The Center for Economic and Workforce Development (CEWD) in partnership with Kingsborough’s (KBCC) Culinary Arts program, have coordinated an information session for high school counselors who advise students about college options.
We at KBCC are pioneers in providing students with seamless advancement into our affordable occupational training program, Culinary Arts with Northeast Resiliency Consortium (NRC), and into college. Students can earn college credits through NRC and are offered assistance with the college application process. This system allows for many “on the fence” or unsure students to get comfortable with transitioning into college.

A Project Rise Graduate
I sat down with Natalie, a recent Project Rise graduate, to talk about her experiences with the program.
Me: How did you hear about Project Rise and what made you sign up?
Natalie: My mother. She saw the Project Rise advertisement in the Kingsborough Community College Brochure. My family is run on tough-love so she basically threw the brochure at me and told me I needed to get my G.E.D (I swear she is a very kind and funny woman). But I did like how they offered a paid internship and work readiness. Heaven knows I had no job experience.
Me: You just graduated. Congratulations! What did you like most about the program?
Natalie: Generally I liked the whole package. The fact that I was going to be able to study and take the G.E.D. for free and have a paid internship along with obtaining college credits not to forget we had the chance to work on the Urban Farm, it was great…still is.
Congratulations CUNY CareerPATH Marketing!
CUNY CareerPATH‘s marketing team, led by Christine Zagari-LoPorto at Kingsborough Community College, was just awarded the James C. Hall Program Award for Marketing from the Continuing Education Association of New York (CEANY)! This recognition highlights CCPs marketing efforts in print, online, and direct outreach. Utilizing methods that directly targeted populations who would benefit the most from our services (local neighborhood newspapers for out of work adults, young adults using social media, text notifications, local and regional job fairs, etc.), CCP far exceeded original enrollment outcome goals. This award recognizes the efforts of CUNY CareerPATH’s lead marketing team who collaborated with the CUNY Central Office and the other consortium colleges to develop innovative campaigns that helped CCP succeed.
The full award will be announced in early November at CEANY’s 2014 Annual Conference in Syracuse, NY.

Project Rise Cohort 5 Graduation
Friday, October 10th marked an important milestone for members for Project Rise Cohort 5: graduation! This cohort was one of the most active and engaged groups we have seen with the number of students earning their GEDs, completing internship hours and staying enrolled surpassing previous cohorts. This group was so engaged, they even designed their own graduation t-shirt, sashes (made by a fellow classmate) and yearbook filled with photos and stories of their year with the program. Graduates were presented with heartfelt messages from staff members along with their certificates and celebrated with friends and family members who encouraged their success. Congratulations, Cohort 5!

NRC at Local Job Fair
On Sept 19th, NRC Program Coordinator, Fiormelissa Johnson, had the opportunity to attend NYS Senator Joe Addabbo’s Job Fair at the Rockway/Arverne YMCA. Ms. Johnson stated, “There must have been over 400 people in attendance and thankfully it was very well attended by vendors as well.” In an effort to boost employment and provide additional resources to the Far Rockaway community, Senator’s Addabbo’s office contacted numerous companies and not-for-profits; many of which were hiring or, like the Northeast Resiliency Consortium (NRC), providing low cost training and employment readiness services to needed communities in New York City. Some of the companies that were in attendance were: Delta, NYC Police Department, Sears, AARP, Kingsborough Community College (NRC program), Avon and many more. “Overall, the Job Fair was a success, as you looked around the enormous gym, where the event was held, you can see nothing but smiling potential employees.”
